From first sounds to final papers.

Teaching is one-to-one at every stage. What changes is what we are teaching towards — a foothold in reading and number, or a grade in a public exam.

Signs to look for

When it is worth asking the question.

None of these on its own means very much. Several of them together, in a child who is clearly bright, is usually worth a conversation.

  • Reads far below the level they can talk at, or avoids reading aloud entirely.
  • Spells the same word three different ways on one page.
  • Homework takes hours longer than the teacher intended it to.
  • Written work is much weaker than the same answer given out loud.
  • Still counting on fingers well past the age you would expect.
  • Reverses letters or digits — b and d, 6 and 9, 12 and 21 — beyond the early years.
  • Loses the place while reading, or skips lines without noticing.
  • Reports say 'not applying themselves' about a child who is visibly trying.
  • School enjoyment has quietly collapsed, or stomach aches arrive on school mornings.
